Voices of Experience

As an event photographer I must say that I get to see some pretty cool parties. Even if I’m focused on my job – making sure I get those killer photos – it’s still nice to see people enjoying themselves and having a good time. However, occasionally I get to photograph events that are not only entertaining, but also educational and truly inspiring; which brings me to the Daniels College of Business Voices of Experience lecture series. This has been an ongoing program at Daniels and provides a platform for known leaders in business to share some of their history and experiences.

Kent J. Thiry :: CEO of DaVita

This specific event featured Kent J. Thiry, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DaVita, a leading provider of kidney care and dialysis services and education in America. I must say this was an incredible lecture to be able to photograph. Even though my eye is always at the viewfinder – waiting for that great moment to snap a photo – it was difficult to ignore Mr. Thiry’s talk. He is clearly passionate about his work at DaVita, and it became obvious that he has created a very unique environment that draws out the very best of those around him. I only hope I was able to capture his energy in photos. For those interested, feel free to view his lecture on YouTube.

All in all this turned out to be a fantastic shoot to kick off the outdoor spring season; and as a photographer who loves location shooting, there’s really nothing better than working outside! See the samples below…

UPDATE :: LR4 Now Supports the 5D Mark3!!

Adobe has just launched an update to Lightroom 4 with native support for the 5D Mark III!! You can download the Lightroom 4.1 Release Candidate here. The process described below should still work for users trying to get their 5D3 files into Lightroom 3. I do not know if Adobe plans official 5D3 support in LR3.

With Canon’s new full-frame powerhouse, the 5D Mark III, hitting the street this week, there seems to be some confusion about how to open its RAW files in Lightroom. As of today – March 23rd – there is no support for the 5D3′s RAW files in Lightroom 3 (LR3) or Lightroom 4 (LR4). Although the new Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 6.7 Beta does support the 5D3 files, most photographers do not want to use Photoshop’s direct Camera Raw importer for bulk image processing.

With that said, I’m sharing this “how to” as a stop-gap to help photographers get their 5DmkIII’s RAW files into LR4 until a formal update is provided by Adobe Systems.

Step By Step :: Get Your 5D3 Files Into LR4

• First, download Adobe’s DNG Converter 6.7 software. (Note: This is a release candidate/beta, so some bugs may exits)
• Install the DNG Converter software.
• Now, open the DNG Converter Software and select the folder that holds your Canon 5D3 camera RAW files.
• Next, set an output folder for the converted files.
• Click “Convert,” crack open a beer, and wait while your 5Dmk3 RAW files are converted to Adobe’s DNG raw file format.
• Once the conversion is complete – import your new DNG raw files in Lightroom 4!

March 26 :: 5D Mark III News From Adobe!

On Monday, March 26, adobe employee “MadManChan2000″ posted in Adobe’s Offical Lightroom Support Forum that a dot update will be coming “soon” to provide native support for 5D3 files in Lightroom. See the quote of his post below:

There will soon be a Lightroom 4 update with support for the 5D III. Please stay tuned.

In the meantime, you can use the free DNG Converter 6.7 Release Candidate from Adobe Labs.

This is great news. So just hang tight 5D3 users – we should have an official update soon. In the meantime, Adobe is recommending the DNG Converter method I had provided earlier in this post.

Red Rocks Photo Contest

After winning the Red Rocks Photography contest last year, I began receiving requests for posters and prints of some of the photos. Getting some of these images prepared for printing was a rather onerous task, since I wanted to ensure they could be printed at large sizes while still retaining a high level a quality. This attention to detail required some long nights of editing, however, I think it has finally paid off.

My first set of photo proofs have arrived back from the printer, and I couldn’t be more pleased. While these are only 8×10 proofs, they have enough detail for me to authorize larger prints. I also plan to have a page up in the coming days where prints from my Red Rocks collection can be ordered directly. The first set will be a small collection of 3-4 prints, but I will be expanding this as additional photos are prepped for printing.

This body is in pristine condition, and is as good as you will see for a used 5D. This 5D body was never dropped, banged, bumped, or dinged. I am a professional photographer and take very good care of all my gear. You can rest assured it is in perfect working condition.

I’m also including a Polaroid full-size battery grip. It holds two batteries, has a wireless remote control, and also has a programmable intervalometer built in for doing time-lapse photography and star-trail work.

CanonRumors has just published what appears to be the first complete spec sheet for the 5DmkIII in a new blog post, along with what seem to be real product photos. It also looks like we’ll be treated to a 5D3 kit that includes the new 24-70 f/2.8L II lens, in addition to a separate product announcement for a new 590 EX flagship flash.
